What is the highest gymnastics score possible?

Theoretically, there is no absolute maximum score in artistic gymnastics under the current Code of Points. Previously, a "perfect 10" was possible, but that system was abolished for elite-level gymnastics.

Here's why:

 • Difficulty Score (D-score): This score is based on the sum of the difficulty values of the skills performed in the routine. There's no limit to how difficult a routine can be (in theory), so the D-score can theoretically be infinitely high. Gymnasts are always striving to push boundaries and incorporate increasingly complex skills.

 • Execution Score (E-score): This score starts at 10.0, and deductions are taken for errors in execution, artistry, and technique. While deductions are possible, the initial score is fixed, meaning the maximum possible execution score is always 10.0.

 • Final Score: The final score is calculated by adding the D-score and the E-score. Since the D-score has no upper limit, neither does the final score.

While a truly "perfect" routine that earns a 10.0 E-score is rare, the focus is now on the difficulty and innovation in a gymnast's routine, rather than striving for a specific, capped score. The FIG(Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique) sets the rules and guidelines for scoring, which are regularly updated.
